    Hello,
I have a VW Sharan 1997 TDi and the last few weeks when starting the engine it some times sounds like the battery is flat/low (Turns over slow and starter clicks) yet if you turn ignition off and turn it on again it starts line.
Have checked conections and battery and all seem fine.
I would of thought that if it was starter motor it would do it all the time and get worse?!

    Any Ideas???

it sounds to me like internal contacts of starter motor, but a quick check of battery before you
pull starter off wouldn't hurt. if the battery has caps that you can remove( some are maintenance free and don't have them) take the caps off and look at the water in the cells as someone cranks engine. if any of the cells show signs of bubbles then it's gone. WEAR SAFETY GLASSES WHEN DOING THIS. if it is the starter then sometimes the contacts will
make, and sometimes they won't, and yes it will get worse as it's just started to show now.
    good luck.

Today my wife drove it to the local shop and it total gave up starting! So she had to leave it there and walk home!

Towed it back to our house and put a load tester on the battery and it was fine.
Cleaned all the conections and checked wires, But still no go!
So removed the starter (And also removed skin off knuckels!) and put some jump leads directly to it but starter would not turn! Removed end cap off started and it was all black and smelly and looked worn out.

Decided to go get a new starter (cost £103.49 from Euro Car Parts).

    Fitted and now starting fine!

    Thanks

    Leigh
