You should have bought a VR6
    RamAir induction kit
    Full stainless Longlife exhaust
    Scorpion de-cat pipe
    Dub Power 10mm Blue Leads
    = 206.2 bhp / 216 ftlb torque

Could be the turbo overboosting and the engine reducing power to limp home mode. Generally resets itself when you switch off and doesn't happen again until you need full power.

I had it on my TDI Alhambra, there are posts on several forums which cover VW/AUDI/SEAT/FORD which have the VW/AUDI engine.

If this is the case turbo vanes are sticking and need cleaning, either by taking it apart, or giving the car a good work out which heats up turbo and burns off some of the carbon deposits

Have a look at this link, it may help

Thanks...for both replies...I would like a VR6, but for now I will take my car up the motorway in 4th and try to clean the old girl out. It was previously owned by someone who may well noever have pushed the car much, so clogging may be to blame for my loss of power. Wil get back to you on this.

    No joy...
I am havning the car put througha major service...and I am worried. There were a few things I overlooked when buying it a few weeks ago...school boy errrors which could end up costing me a fortunce getting the car running in top-notch condition.

Have you compared it to another similar car It could be the tubes that monitor the air pressure around the system.
Saw an Ibiza with this problem, the box where all the pipes meet was actually left unconnected after some suspension work.
It feels just like a car without a turbo and runs out of go at about 80 -90 ish
