Did the keyfob work before the radio was fitted, halfords fit the radio? What radio was in the car originally?

Hi, thanks for your response - they key fob worked originally and the car had the bog standard basic VW stereo, I fitted it myself, The new one is a normal sony face off - somone mentioned yesterday it could be running of too much battery power because the stereo can be switched on without the key in the ignition and i have to switch it off myself when i leave the car (it doesnt turn off itself)

When you bought the sony from halfords, did you get an adapter lead to swap over the vw wiring to standard radio wiring? If not go back to halfords an ask for the lead and an aerial booster if your radio isn't receiving many stations. It will be expensive from halfords, or this site.

Your stereo wiring harness should be "adaptable".

EDIT: Before you do any of the below... does your radio lose it's memory when turned off??? (do you have to reset the station everytime you turn the car on?)

Take the stereo out, and swap the connections on your red and yellow wires (they normaly have plugs on them). These cables are your switched live, and permanent live.... This will mean that the stereo will now work frim the ignition as before.

As for the central locking??? Did you get any sparks when you installed your new stereo? just thinking you may of blew a fuse somewhere?

Do the cable swap and see if that fixes the central locking... (i doubt it).

    Good luck

I've recently changed the factory stereo in my 2001 1.8T GTI and have exactly the same problem. When you took out the top CD loader, did you have an additional wire which had no place in your new head unit?
If yes, same here! Motorworld are baffled - this connection doesnt seem to be in all Golf's, but it would appear that this connection is linked to the operation of the keyfob. I'm not that sure what to do about it, looks likely it'll have to go to VW Cardiff (£88 an hour labour!! ) for them to sort out.

If/when I get it looked at i'll post the results.

No... if the memory works... leave the red and yellow cables alone. They are correct.
