As a 1st time owner of Vw golf I've been delighted with it and it's performance over the last 4 months. How ever it's not all been smooth sailing. I've recently replaced the front lambda sensor and water temperature sensor because I was only getting around 18mpg. Since then it's crept upto 25mpg which still isn't great! It's a 2liter gti mark 4, V plate, petrol. Just wondered what the general consesnsus on the consumption was? I'm hoping to draw on your knowledge as I'm sure some of you will have been proud golf users and owners much longer than me. So what is everyone average mpg?

Cheers in adavance guys, and gals

Spot on Marc... good to see you on here

MK 4 2.0 GTI is N/A, 115 BHP.... Which is quite poor for a 2.0L. It does have a pretty good torque curve though...

Yeah sadly no turbo. Been driving it conservatively but it doesn't seem to make any difference. Replaced the front lambda sensor, but think I might need to replace the 2nd one as well!

me and a mate drove his 2.0 gti from lowestoft to lands end last summer, average 30mpg, and thats over 800miles of motorway and dual carriageway so i wouldn't expect to be beating that figure by much. it was driven a little aggressively so maybe you'd get 32 if you cruised at 70 all the way.

as for performance its pretty much a straight match for my 1.8 20v b5 a4 and thats without a turbo. i average 34mpg and my cars (i think) around 200kg heavier, so the 2.0 litre lump is not exactly efficient. as stated above that torque is available from lower down the rev range in the golf.
