hi all, virgin poster on here

I have some problem with my esp light staying on ..
first time it came on I turned my ignition off and on and it went off but half hour later it came back on.

a month went by and on a wet day the wheels spun and it started working again?? so did a few test spins and it flashed as it should and was working fine again? all was well for a few days and bugger me its back..!

I have had it on a hand held vag and there was no communication with the unit so thinkin it may be a dodgy ecu for the traction control? I aint no mechanic so only a guess .. god dam expencive if I am right I would say?

the car is a 2003 golf gt tdi 130 I have tested the abs as somone pointed to this as a problem but it works fine, there is no brake lights out either so its not that.

the only other thing that has been dun on the car is a new selector fork in the gear box - rivet snapped between 1st and 2nd (ouch expensive)! box out to get fixed. with it out I put in a new clutch and flywheel as the car had just reached it 150th birthday anyway since that had been done the steerin wheel has never pointed straight since ... it like points to the 1 oclock position when drivin forward...
long story sorry bout that...... but could this be the simple solution could it be this? I have been readin that there is a sensor in the steerin colum could this be thinking that i am drivin in circles at 50 60 mph and therfore the esp is staying on??

cant think of anything else that it could be so any advise will be great.

    thanks all

i think the esp light doubles as a engine warning light, sometimes mine stays on and it was a esp sensor so a vac com should tell you what it is..

for some reason I could not get the vag to read anything? this is whay I am thinking of a esp unit problem.. or would a faulty sensor on one of the wheels cause it not to respond?.
is there any way to test the sensor`s or take em off and clean em.. my only other problem then is where are they located behind the wheels?

It could well be related you the Gearbox removal, if one of the ABS sensors has been knocked on the hub while the drive shafts were hung or out, Im not sure why the steering wheel centre should have been altered by taking the gbox out ? You really need to correct the faults you know are there before looking for others.

The diagram below is a different model but they're all pretty much the same in terms of location, your looking at items 1 - 2 - and 3

cheers nutty will leave that till the weekend to have a look,

regards the steerin wheel thats what the garage said but I thought with taking the drive shafts out it could have moved I must be wrong?, I only know cos I hate to see a wheel pointin just off center either at the 1oclock or11 position and traveling straight and it was not like it before it went in.
the only reason I mentioned the steering is because of the sensor in the coloum I think I am just trying to eliminate all possibilities before spendin a wad on a new esp control unit

It may not be the reason the light is on but the steering wheel sensor needs to know the wheels are pointed straight ahead. By removing the gearbox you have upset the toe in some way. I advise you to have the geometry checked and get the sensor calibrated asap.
The car will think you are continuously cornering and will have problems trying to control you if you get into a skid!
