Hiya, Im a newbie just wanting some opinions really please, Ive seen a gorgeous A3 1.6 FSI sport - lava grey, 05 plate 22,400 miles, or a Golf, 56 plate 1.6 FSI match, reflex silver, 15,000 miles (500 cheaper) and Im completely torn between which I want!!!

We have an X reg golf at the moment and Ive been told Audis cost a lot more to repair, is that correct?, do I go for the gorgeous A3 with a few scuffs etc inside & out, including a felt tip pen mark on the roof lining, or an 18mth newer car still in warrantly, still gorgeous, with all the odds and sods on it etc etc and a couple of minor marks but nothing to cry home about, help??? which would you buy?

Ps Hubbies father works for volkswagon so when audi year warrantys finished it would probably be serviced there, so would the parts etc be much more than were used to paying with our present golf.

Also the Audi doesnt seem to have a lot of pull in it ie when I put my foot down it doesnt just whoosh, great speed but wouldnt give me a lot of confidence for example if overtaking, is this normal?

Any comments would be appreciated, thanks in advance,

    Lizi x

r you buying them private or trade? Golf for me with the warrenty but i would say that . their's no price difference their isnt at the garage were i work. really just depends were you go to get it repair'd. oh if you go for the audi, spray brake cleaner on it that gets pen off. thats what i use.if your buying from a garage just mention to the sales man that the marks r putting you off (even tho there not) and they should sort the marks out and the valeter should sort it no probs in the pre delivery re clean. if you want the a3 go for it

If you took a brand new Golf GT TDI Sport 5 door to the garage it would cost more to service than the A3, not by much, but more.

The newest versions of both run at 41p per mile.

buy the VW, if hubbies dad works for VW then there's free servicing and or family / staff discount. Plus it'll be collected and returned to you hassle free

Sorry prolfe, i think A3's look less manly than the Golf - its something to do with the rear third that doesn't appeal, the front is great <tries not to use the word girlie or girls car>

I do however like your choice of wheels

I own a golf, I've looked and sat inside the new mk5, as well as the A3 and I have to say that if finances weren't an issue, the A3 would win every time, I personally feel it's a much better looking car than the golf and IMHO, a touch less common than the Gti's gracing our roads.

With both sharing the same engine, theres little to tell the difference there. You will find the 1.6 quite gutless i'm afriad, definitley not a happy bunny on the motorway, is a 1.9/2.0 tdi not a possibility?

you also have the fact that the A3 is in the sport trim, with the golf only coming in Match guise.

the A3 will suffer from depreciation less, due to the 4 badges it has adorning its bonnet.

if your pappy/in law works for a VW dealer, you're sorted for servicing and repairs, the difference between the golf/a3 (if any) would be marginal. Golfs are not as cheap to maintain as some would have you believe.
