    Hi All

I have trawled the forum to find these answers, but no joy..

    - how much oil is needed for an oil service?
    - is Mobil 1 0w-40 'Turbo Diesel' Fully Synth a good oil to use?

    Car is 2002 A4 1.9 tdi 130 Avant, 5sp manual.

    Thanks!

On Longlife intervals the oil must conform to VW standard 507 00 or 506 01 and on normal intervals 505 01.

It seems that Mobil 1 0w-40 is endorsed as VW 502.00/505.00/503.01.

Would that make it ok for normal service intervals?
i.e. it doesn't say 505.01 as you have mentioned.

502 00 is petrol engine on fixed interval, 505 00 is NON PD TDI and 503.01 is petrol engine Longlife so it is NOT PD suitable.

Thanks for the explanation Crasher! Clear as a bell!

I think I heard before that the car takes 5.5L to fill. Would you know if that's accurate?

Just under five litres normally. We use VAG Quantum PD (normal interval) or Longlife III and there is very little left in the can after filling.

    Crasher

You may be able to clarify here please. I've trawled info from many resources re oil and am aware of the .01 spec for PD engines. What many other forums endorse is using a fully synthetic oil. I use Millers XFE-PD which is 505.01 and 5w40. This is high synthetic, not fully. Fully tends to be 5w30? I drain every 6 months or 6k miles with a new filter. May be excessive but for £35 I'm sure the engine appreciates it.

I can't see a reason for spending extra on fully synthetic unless the car really should using 5w30?? The above oil meets VWs spec.

    Cheers

    Marco

We use Quantum PD on that sort of schedule. The only engine I get funny about not using a fully synth on is the Golf 150PD and I recommend those still have 10k oil changes even on long life oil.

So I went to the part supplier today and bought Fuchs Titan SuperSyn Long Life 0w-30. This meets the 503.00, 506.00 and 506.01 standards.

They also had Fuchs Titan PD 5w-30 which is 505.01, and nearly half the price.

The guy recommended that for 12 month or 10k service intervals (which I have been following - I don't like to leave oil for longer than 10k miles), that I should spend the little more and get the better oil. I tended to agree with him.

    What do you guys reckon?
