First of all Hello everyone.....this looks an interesting place.
I have read many simular threads concerning this "common" problem that my car has developed.
was joining the motorway nearly 2 weeks ago and suddenly power dropped on my Passat.
The car ticks over fine ,mpg seems about normal, but soon as the car hits a incline or hill,it struggles to get up it.
The car has lost its torguey grunt.
After reading this and other related forums the general school of thought was the MAS.
So decided to take a chance on this........fitted the genuine Bosch replacement.
    Problem still there.
Took the car to my local GSF and the guy said he could drop his VAG com on it to check it?
    It showed a MAS fault.
Thinking the new MAS was faulty he supplied me with another new one.
This time I decided to take the engine cover off and have a good look round at the same time.
Looking at the vacum hoses, the 2 that came off the EGR control valve....one of them was open....as if it had come off its location point.
Now on the top of the actuall EGR valve their looked a nipple where the pipe maybe had come off.
Great I thought,I`ll replace this and job done.
So replaced the hose and connected btween the EGR control valve and the actuall EGR valve and the engine cut out?????
Looking closer the original vacum hose did not look long enough to reach the EGR valve......but I could not find any other place for it to connect to.
Back to GSF then.........VAG com plugged in showing MAS fault.
    I is puzzled .
GSF man said the EGR control valve looks the culprit (this sits on top of the MAS) thats why we is getting MAS errors.
Now this is only £17 so maybe I will try this but I cannot fathom where the second vacum hose from the said EGR control valve goes......or is it left open ended?
BTW can I just say how good the guys at my local GSF have been.
Thanks in advance to any help anyone can give me.

Looked at my mates 130 tdi pd to check the layout of the vacum hoses.
Looked like R was right by connecting the "loose" hose to the EGR valve from the EGR valve control.
So the fact that the engine then cuts out hopefully means the EGR conrol valve is stuck/faulty.
This is my next "plug and play" and hope.
    Thanks for the help people...........

    ......well
after 2 weeks of frustration my Passat is running well again.
The culprit was a £19 EGR control valve.
Thanks for all the advice and help people...........

    All the time.
I presume the EGR Control valve failed shut/or sommat, not allowing any "measured/metered" air to the actual EGR valve.

If the EGR valve fails in the closed position, it should not cause any problems. If it sticks open, it will allow exhaust gases into the inlet manifold at all times, instead of just at light load/small throttle opening.

If I connected the vacum hose from the EGR control valve to the EGR valve...the engine would cut out.
If I put my finger over the EGR valve you could feel it "sucking".
Don`t know if it failed open or closed but replacing it has cured the problem.
As a side note.....I presume I will still have the error logged on the cars "brain".
Will I need the error clearing via say VAG COM or will disconnecting the battery do the trick.
Some say this is a myth?
