Wondering if anyone can shed a bit of light on this for me...?

    I've got a VW Golf 1.4S 2001 / 51 Plate.
I've never had a VW before, so not sure how much to believe...
It says in the documents about using the correct type of oil for VW's...

Now is this just VW chat trying to make some extra cash when they say "You must use this brand etc etc" ?

Can I use any brand, and if so what do others who have the same model or close use in their engines? is there a cheap, but good brand any folks can recommend?

Any info would be well appreciated...

It is really important to use the right oil in your car, because it can cause all types of problems if you don't such as big end wear, also to keep to the oil service periods, I always use comma products, depending on your engine code it could be SYNER-G 5w-40 or Prolife 5w-30
    hope this is of help

    Hi v6dub...

    Cheers for the info, but...
Firstly, what's "big end wear" ?

Also, been seeing a fair amount of pointers towards Comma products on here. So I take it that the bottom line is, use a good quality oil, but it doesn't need to be VW oil right?

The oil codes you say above, SYNER-G 5w-40 or Prolife 5w-30.
I checked out the info on their website and next to the SYNER-G 5w-40 it says "Meets requirements of: VW 502.00/505.00"

In my manual it says use:
    Multi-Grade high lubricity oils: VW 500 00 OR VW 502 00
High lubricity oils: VW 501 01

Now this is going to sound dumb,
    but can you tell me:
What do the series of numbers refer too? i.e. 500 00 etc
    Also, what's the difference between
Multi-Grade high lubricity oils AND High lubricity oils?

    Cheers....

    Hi,

    I have golf 1.4 16v year 2002.

You need to have a look what type of service interval do you have:
Service Interval QG1 = Flexible Service Interval (Long-life service - up tp 19000 miles/24months) or
    Service Interval QG0/2 = Time/distance dependent interval (non-flexible) up to 9000 /12 months.

For QG1 - you should use long life oil - e.g. Castrol EDGE 05W-30 Long life III VW 504 00/507 00. That oil is new version of oil and it is compatible with 500.00/502.00/505.00 - see below - info from castrol website:

    1. Engine oil viscosity options prior to 5/99 : using EO VWG 502.00 1/97, 0W-X/5W-X/10W-X; using EO VWG 500.00 1/97 high lubricity oils, -30°C to 35°C, 5W-30/5W-40/10W-30/10W-40; using EOV VWG 501.01/505.00; -30°C to 35°C, 5W-50/10W-50/10W-60; -30°C to 15°C, 5W-30/5W-40; -15°C to 15°C, 10W-30/10W-40; -15°C to 40°C, 15W-40/15W-50, 20W-40/20W-50. Model year 2000 onwards with variable service intervals using LongLife oils. Only vehicles identified appropriately by VIN plate markings and /or dealer service label for Variable Service are capable of operating to the maximum service change intervals.

For QC0 - you can use 05W-30 long life but you must to change it for 12 months or 9000 miles. Also you can use 10W-40 VW505.00.

I have QG1 engine and I was using long life oil from begin - Shell, ESSO, now castrol 05W-30.

That engine is quite thirsty - eat a lot of oil - about 1liter/3-5000 miles. I would recomended you just brand oil because that engine is very sensitive for good quality of oil.

    Regards,

    Daniel

    What he said!

It is very important to use good oil and keep it changed, that is the main thing.
