Graham, I have the same car as you and had the same problem. There are 4 little filament bulbs that backlight the display and these fail after time. To get the unit out and replace them you need to take the fascia panel off that goes around the unit, the switches and the radio. You'll have to take the radio out first to expose the fascia panel bolts. Once you've got the unit out you just need new bulbs and a pair of long nosed pliers/screwdriver to change the bulbs.

There seems to be another problem with these units where you lose digits on the display. That can be cured by taking the unit apart, dismantling the LCD and cleaning the contact pads on the PCB with some fine wet and dry. Hopefully just changing the bulbs will fix your problem though!

    Oliver
