details of my problems in the link above (it's been moved to the archive)

I have fitted a new MAF to the car, it didnt work.
The MAF was found to be faulty (and it was a bosch one) so fitted a second sensor.
OK, it does run better (there was a lag before the turbo cut in, thats much improved) but it still goes into limp mode when the engine is put under load.
After loads and loads of more fiddling with the car it does look like the control mechanisim on the turbo is not working, and its over boosting causing the car to go limp.

I have copied and pasted my original thread below...

My passat is driving (or not driving as the case may be) me up the wall... it goes into limp mode after about 5 mins... and wouldnt pull the skin off a rice pudding.
I have taken it to a garage, and its been pluged in and tested to death.. the MAF was checked but showed no faults.

however.. I have read a fair bit on this most excellent site and I feel fairly confident that it is the MAF. So.. I have ordered a new one (bosch of course as per the advice on this site) and when it is fitted I will let you know how it goes. I am an utter noob when it comes to mechanics, however I think i can change this part without a lot of difficulty (I hope)

    Hi,

I'm not going to be able to help you I'm sorry but I hope you can help me. Please read my thread below:

    https://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/s...ad.php?t=28059

You mention in your thread that your turbo lag was improved after you fitted a new MAF. How much improved was it? And what is a MAF and how much do they cost and was it easy to fit?

    Thank you!

the maf cost just under 70 quid for a genuine bosch unit, I had to return the old one else pay another 20 quid on top.
It has made a difference to the lag problem.
However, the turbo is still overboosting, and it seems that I have finally got the bottom of it all.
bad news, it needs a new turbo.
good news, the previous owner had a new one fitted about a year ago and it has a 24 month warranty! So I am having the new turbo fitted next week for nothing!!!

    Result! :-D
