Hello,I am using my 1989 90 20v quattro for my commute to work but I really need a more economical option! My budget is only about £1500 and I am struggling to find a decent A4 TDI at that price. How does a 1.6 or 1.8 compare with fuel economy ??

My 1.8se does 28 mpg with the a/c on and between 32 - 35 mpg with a/c off. Not bad really when you consider the cost of diesel and the amount of miles you would need to travel to make a diesel worthwhile.

on a good run..the wife gets 28mpg out of a 2.4 V6...on the other hand I get around 24MPG..but I do have a heavy right foot...But I have to say that the fuel consumption is far better then the Hyundia Coupe 2.7V6 which I used to have...that used to 310 on a good run where my Audi gets 350

I had the same dilemma, i waited and got a cheap '97 tdi a4 avant, and when i go racing (5/6 times a yr) and it's 200-300 miles EACH WAY to a a race, i'm glad of the tdi as i'm get 60-65mpg on a nice run, and round town 50mpg

Totally agree that TDI's have great fuel economy. However, with diesel between 6- 10p a litre more expensive than petrol and A4 petrol variants being a lot cheaper you really have to do your maths. Also, getting a diesel A4 in the sub 2K bracket wich hasn't got serious miles (200,000+) or dog tired looking ones with no history is very hard.
