Hi, I was going to take my car for a service but when i saw the price in VW I thought I would get the parts & get a mate to do it. So I was wondering if all the parts I need to get a listed below & if anyone has any tips when servicing a Golf as Ive only had it a few months. Car is a Golf mk4 1.6 16v

    • Oil Filter
    • Air Filter
    • Pollen Filter
    • Spark Plugs
    • Engine oil
    • Sump plug?
    • Fuel Filter? (or is that diesels only)
Think that it, not too sure though.

    Thanks in advance!

Hello Sloggs, you dont need to change the fuel filter.I would advise the cambelts and the ribbed belt and also the cambelt tensioner and all the rollers as well as the water pump to prevent any future failings as the water pumps and then tensioner pulley can fail.It will still work out cheaper than the dealer full service and you will have peace of mind.

Think you've pretty much covered everything needed for a basic engine service. You won't need a new sump plug, all you need is a new sump bung which looks like a washer and goes onto the sump plug to ensure it doesn't come loose. It's only the diesel engines that need the fuel filter to be replaced as part of its regular service but if it has never been replaced on your car or if you're not sure then there's no harm replacing it anyway, but it doesn't need done every time you service the car. Every 3 years/60K miles would be more than enough for a petrol engine to have the fuel filter replaced. Check your brake pads and discs while you're at it as well to see if they need replaced and also check the coolant level/antifreeze. The gearbox oil level should also be checked every 20K miles.

Yeah that's more or less what you need but I would probably avoid ebay for things like this just in case, you can't be sure of the quality and this is a very critical part of the engine. Have a look here for some prices

Also as said above, change the cambelt tensioner, water pump and the ribbed belt while you're at it .

Personally, I'd forget fleaBay for such an important part. Simply not worth saving a few quid on some cheapo replacement part that could well be of sub-standard quality.

Yea as the others have said, just a basic service can be done in an hour or two, but i wouldnt touch ebay! A good motor factors will ensure you get the right parts at the right price. Ive got the 8v 1.6 and it cost me £30 for parts and an hour and a half to service.

    Hi Guys

I have just serviced my girlfriends Golf 1.9 tdi, changing the oil, oil filter and air filter.

I was considering changing the fuel filter too, its got 80k on it and would probably be a good thing to do.

Does anyone know if this is a big job to do ? and roughly how much a fuel filter would be likely to set me back?

    Peter

A diesel fuel filter only costs around £10 and it's very easy to change, should only take about 15 minutes. Click on the link below for a how-to guide.
