    I bought the car a few weeks back and it seems to get through petrol like there is no tomoro. its only a 1 litre and 20 quid has got me just over 100 miles. this doesn't seem right to me, anyone got any ideas?

    thats deffo not right! check exhaust for leaks, also the injector could have messed up. aparently this is not uncommon on the vw spi system and can have a massive effect on fuel consumption. i fitted a late spec 1.3 spi injector to my old 1 litre, this made it go a bit quicker and had no effect on fuel consuption that i could notice. used to get around 200 mile to £20

    it is an L Reg 4 speed, does this make any difference?

    does it idle excessivly high and do you have a lead right foot? can you smell petrol outside the car? polo tanks are prone to rot and can leak if the tank is above teh rottin area
    is it a carb model, might be a stuck autochoke or carb needs setting up...
