ABS Warning Light

My ABS warning light used to come on during driving and then sometimes go off or go off when engine was stopped. Now the light just constantly stays on. MOT due next week and to be honest i'm panicking a bit about this.
Basically what I need to know are what are the most common faults which keep the warning light on. Its a 1996 MK3 Golf Cabriolet.
Had my front brake pads done about three months ago so I don't think that the brake pads need done. I have been told it could be one of the sensors which doesn't stop whatever brake locking. Also the other day there I had to brake quite hard and my front left wheel locked up. No other one though. Is it possible that its the front left sensor.

my light flashed up on me and it turned out to be a dislodge sensor which once repositioned put the warning light back to bed
but it could be any one of a number of faults if you are mechanically minded you could use a volts meter to test each sensor to see if they are working but that is why we have vag com i dont know much about this but it will stop all the messing about of solving the problem and point straight to it. it may be worth just paying for a diagnostic and this will save you a lot of replacing bit that are not needed and may also help with any other issues you are not aware of
