hissing type noise when accelerating

hi there,

i have a 1.6 2000 golf mkIV AKL engine. just after I change into a higher gear and out my foot down i get this noise from the engine, as soon as the "strain" is taken away from the engine and the car is up to speed in that gear and the revs are higher it goes away. its only when the car is under pressure in a new gear if that makes sense. if i was to accelerate slowly i would just hear smooth revs, slam my foot down and i hear it.

the noise sounds like hissing, air leaking, not totally sure. but i was just curious if anyone had any idea what it could be before i take it in for a look?

my noise definitely doesn't come from the footwell in particular. you can only hear it if you have the window open and your driving down a street so the sound is held so you can hear it. my first thought could be air leak or exhaust. i don't really know what i'm on about though hence my original post!
