hi im just about to buy a 2001 gti 2.0.

i noticed that there is a small (about the size of a box of matchs) bubbling rust patch on the front lower part of the bonnet?

is this normal for a car of this age?

does this mean that the car has been in an accident then been repaired? there are no signs of a respay?

whats the costs involved in gettin it back perfect?

just a bit worried before i go ahead and give away my cash

The body on the Golf's are usually pretty good when it comes to rust so it is a bit suspicious. Ask the owner if it has been damaged and repaired or been in an accident. If it hasn't and the rust is just there naturally, then give a VW dealers a ring and ask what the body work warranty is on the Golfs, it may still be covered as long as the rust is not there as a result of any damage done by the previous owner. If you have to get it repaired yourself, a few hundred pounds would probably cover it so get some money knocked off it if you do buy it.

All as built Mk4 Golf panels/bodyshell are galvanised. They should not rust! If you do have rust then it may well be a replacement non VW (Non galvanised) panel. PROCEED WITH CAUTION!! The seller could be telling Porkie Pies about it not having had any bodywork done!!

However, it may not be rust. It could just be some poorly paint, but something sure aint right.

becuase i went to see it on sat and havnt seen it since...
its really really hard for me to remeber how bad it was.. i dont think it was that bad,
im just sorting the funds to buy now.

i actaully think it was a small part of the front grill, i do remeber lookin at and thinking thats not very good, i wish i had a closer inspection, and actually rubbed it with my finger.

im happy with the rest of the car tho, good service history, clean n tidy
it does need a small amout of body work anyways, some 1 keyed the back door to the front.
the only other thing is theres some slight wear on the side of the drivers seat looks like something caught on it, or the ower before used 2 rub there hand there? the rest of the seat is tidy.

the price does reflect these things i pointed out..
shudnt cost me 2 much 2 get it back 2 perfect!

im gonna take a proper look tho b4 i hand over the money!
