Sorry to post this here but had to post it somewhere although its aimed at all audi models.

    This is a 2002 A4 2.4 Sport

    This is a 2004 A6 1.8T

You can just about spot that on the top pic the manual gate goes to the left and on the bottom pic the gate goes to the right. Are they both multitronic and problematic ?

Top picture is Multitronic, bottom picture is Tiptronic.

I've not had an issue with my Multitronic, but have had it from new, and made sure it had all the gearbox oil changes it should have had.

Thanks Froggy but Im still a bit confused. If the bottom pic is tiptronic what is this ? Could this be the earlier version of tiptronic ?

    This is an A6 2.8SE

Same thing in an A6 TDi SE

Thankyou in advance for helping me understand.

    Hi Macp,
I believe that both are multitronic and that the gate to the right is the foreign set up.I've got my A4 cab going to the left, and also drove a Skoda that had the same set up.
Multitronic mean you have both an automatic and triptronic option on the gearbox. When you move the lever over to the gate you select the gears manually, and I'm quoting from my car manual.
I don't know how common the gate to the right is.I've seen several multitronic gearboxes but never one like this.I would check with Audi.It might make a problem with selling it on,or servicing.

I have just had a look..

A4 - Trip to the left...

A6 - Trip to the right..

Different gearboxes hence the different postion,.

Sorry Mr Solo, but Tiptronic and Multitronic are completely different gearboxes...

The Tiptronic box is a conventional torque converter style auto box.
The Multitronic is a CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) style auto.

Both auto boxes have the facility to be put into a "sport or manual" mode that in the case of the CVT box, gives you "gears" (6 on mine, 7 on the later ones and on the new B8 A4, 8 gears!)

On an A4 the easy way to tell is that the gate for the manual mode is on the left for the Multitronic and on the right for Tiptronic box. The Tiptronic box is used on the Quattro models, because the Multitronic can't handle the torque from the increased engine output.

Not so sure about the A6 units - I thought the gearboxes were the same, but am happy to be wrong.

My 2006 A6 is multitronic. Manual mode (7 gears) is on the left. Its also got flappy paddles, though I seldom use them.
