  1. Passat X reg 1.8 petrol warm start problem

    Hi

I've suffered intermittent warm start problems for the last year or so but it usually gets going after 2 or 3 attempts. Always starts first time from cold.

When warm, the starter turns over but it doesn't really try to start. Eventually, it may stutter a bit before starting but in the last week, I've been stuck twice. It just didn;'t start at all until I left it for 30 minutes or so then tried again.

Also noticed on a couple of occasions when it did start that the idle speed was very high at 2000-2500 revs.

Local garage just replaced the temp sensor but no luck. They also ran some diagnostics but no codes were logged.

    Anyone have any other suggestions?

    Thanks

    Derek

    Hi Derek,

No solution, I'm afraid, but I have an almost exact same problem with my X-plate Passat (1.8T petrol engine). It start fine when cold or if it's been running for a good while. But if I run for ~10 min. or so from cold the engine coolant shows 90C BUT it's *always* very difficult to restart. I have no warning lights, or messages (e.g., Check engine). I can usually start eventually with the petrol pedal on full.

I haven't noticed the engine idling too fast, though. I haven't had the car into the garage yet, and your posting makes me the more cautious! It's been well maintained, but I've had this problem for a few months.

    Many thanks for your thoughts,
    Mike

    Hi All,

Just to say that this problem was fixed by replacing the coolant temperature sensor (PN 059919501A) and an O-ring (N90316802) for my Passat/1.8T engine.

    Thanks,
    Mike

Crankshaft position sensors fail in this way. I am not sure on passats, but I had a polo with this problem and changing the crank shaft position sensor solved it. Also common failure with the same symptoms on other makes too.
