I stand to be corrected but, er, no.

Do increase bhp/torque, but also increase smoke and subsequent problems as far as I know.

    Cheers

Have to agree with Paul Jay, they are usually just a 10p resistor contained in a nice box and they work by tricking the engine into thinking the air coming into it is colder than it really is or even that there is more air coming in that there really is. This results in the computer adding more fuel to compensate, that's were you get the feel of a bit more power from, but generally these will cause the car to run too rich and give you big problems down the line. Also, I have seen it done before that the advert for them will say +35bhp and then when you buy it, the small print will claim that it doesn't actually give you an extra 35bhp but rather that is just the name of the product. If you want more power without damaging your engine, save up around £300 and get a proper remap done.

    Thanks for the replies.

What about intercoolers are they worth installing ? I mean how much would I pay and what sort of gains could I expect.

If you already have a tdi engine then you already have an intercooler but it will be side mounted unless you have the 150bhp engine. The best ways to get more power out of them are to get a front mounted intercooler and the VNT17 turbo from the 150bhp tdi engines and the injectors from either the 130 or 150 engines and then get the car remapped. What engine have you got anyway?

    2002 1.9 GT TDI 130.

I'm considering a remap but am just checking to see if there are any worthwhile mods that can be done cheaper.

I am interested in increasing the torque more than bhp simply because I find I am always shifting between 2nd and 3rd at lower speeds. An increase in torque would mean that I could stay in 3rd without a problem, or so I'm told.

i would not bother with one m8 you are asking for trouble might as well just buy a induction kit or a k@n panel filter if u want to get more air in
go for remap if u have a turbo diesel or petrol
like chris.fulton says best way if u want more power
