I used a set of lowered springs off www.rimstyle.com to lower my Golf by 40mm on a set of 17's.. The cheapest option obviously, but very effective!

Get a suspension kit, lowered springs and matching shocks (Jamex, Koni, something like that)

Cheapest way is to cut a coil off the spring, don't do it, very dangerous. You could just change the springs and not the shocks aswell but you'll end up with a car with a bad ride that doesn't handle well and you'll destroy the shocks very quickly (as they won't match the new spring rates).

Bear in mind that as a car get's older it will start to sag anyway, in the 6 years your car has been on the road it is probably already sitting a bit lower than it did out of the factory, but a 30 - 40 mm kit is a reasonable comfortable drop, looks better and will leave the car driveable.
