After my last post about pas fail/alternator fail then engine stops, finally I have a diagnosis:

The timing has slipped despite the belt being fine, and there is piston and valve damage. To fix it:

    £5000.

The car ('98 2.5 TDI Avant AFB engine) is worth:

    £5000.

Ouch. Anyone got any ideas or advice?

Had a good search around online for a crashed one, to no avail - so if anyone knows where I can find one I would be chuffed.

The high cost is because the only company willing to supply a reconditioned engine of that spec (AFB) just now seems to be VW/Audi itself... with a predictable cost.
