Hi there, I was hoping someone out there has had the same problem as I have and could suggest a remedy.

The ABS on my 2002 TDi 130 is kicking in when I am coming to a slow complete stop. It feels like the brakes are grinding and the pedal shudders.

This only happens when I am going extremely slowly...less than 10mph. I have tried an emergency stop from 70mph on a deserted road and the ABS worked perfectly.

The front discs and pads are brand new, and I have replaced both front ABS sensors. There are no fault codes stored in the ECU and the ABS light has never come on. My local dealer reckons the ABS pump needs replacing but they can not be sure. They have also quoted £700, which is not only pricy but they can not guarantee it will cure the fault.

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Many thanks.

I'm not sure this is relevent, but my 98 B5's ABS only worked when at speeds above 7 MPH, so that when slowing down in an emergency stop the ABS worked pulsing the brakes unitll below 7 MPH then locked the wheels for the last few yards ( last 1/2 second or so ).
Once owned 98 1.8 ADR SE non turbo passat estate(The Mrs wrote it off)

Now own 03 TDI 130 Sport 6 Speed passat estate

I have just cured the same problem with my 2003 tdi sport, as with yours, mine started doing it just after fitting new pads and discs.
I removed the rotation sensors and gave them a clean, but I also bled through a couple of 100 cc's of brake fluid, so I'm not certain which one solved the problem.
But when the new discs and pads were fitted, the pistons were pushed back in which forced the old fluid back into the reservoir which I suspect might have sent some muck back into the ABS unit.
Either way it has cured the problem.
