Hello everyone. I've got a question about the use of the Climatronic unit. Ive had cars in the past that have had A/C and i know that when you have the windows down you should have the A/C switched off. So my question is if im going to driving with the window down what setting should the Climatronic be set at? Should i just leave it set to Auto, press the Econ button or switch the unit to the off postion? Thanks for taking the time to read this and i hope to get a few answers soon, Cheers Chris.
Computer games don't affect kids; I mean if Pac-Man affected us as kids, we'd all be running around in darkened rooms, munching magic pills and listening to repetitive electronic music.

Switch the Econ button on. It's for Economy and turns off any kind of Air Conditioning.

Although, you should try and use the Aircon unit regularly to keep it charged up for when you need it the most. Especially during the winter months. but as you say, there's no point if you have the windows open.

Thanks for the very quick responce prolfe. Ive only had the Passat for a couple of weeks and have been mainly using the climatronic with the ECON switched on. Does using the climatronic in auto mode use more petrol. As i understand, the outside air wont need cooling at this time of year so it'll only need warming to the temperature selected inside so surely with it set to auto, my fuel economy won't be affected as much as it would in the summer months or am i missing something?

Having Econ switched off will mean that the Climate Control will condition the air using the Air Con unit and therefore will have an effect on MPG for the worse. Some say between 5 and 10% increase in fuel consumption.

Having Econ switched on will turn off Air Con and will use less petrol.

Even when it's cold it can be an advantage having econ OFF, as it can help demist the screen quickly. Despite the mpg.

Climate control regulates the times that the Air Con unit is used so the 5-10% could be reduced. manufacturers recommend to keep it on all the time to help keep the system healthy.

Well i think it will make more sence to keep the auto switched on and pay slightly more in fuel than havng to spend money on getting the A/C serviced or repaired. My main problem is that i live on a remote island and have to pay £1.12 per litre for petrol.
