    Hello all,

I am looking at buying Audi A4 model 2002 from an individual seller here in Finland. mileage 85 thousand km, multitronic automatic gear box. I has got a good and complete service history, and I have had a test drive. Every thing seems ok and working smoothly. The car has no previous owner, which I think is a plus, was first registered in Finland, and the first price is 19900 euros.

If there is someone out there who knows about Audi A4 multitronics, please advise me on what to consider before buying this car. I have not drivenI have read about the problems with multitronics, which keeps me wondering if this is car is a good choice for 19900 euros. I am still bargaining for a price reduction.

Please send me your comments about this Audi car model - usual faults, common problems, and what to watch out for.

    Awaiting your response

Do you know if the gearbox fluid has been changed? I thinkit should have been done at 40,000 miles (64,000 km?).

    Hi

    I have a 2002 a4 avanti although not multitronic.

I couldn't help noticing the price was high though especially for the mileage. In UK you can pick a similar car up for between 11000 - 12500 euros.

I like the Audi although i have had problems already (after a few weeks) although i love the car as it drives great and feels solid. I suppose it depends if you are prepared to put things right if they go wrong. All cars go wrong eventually, but of course if they are fully serviced you minimise the risk.

I had a breather pipe fault (£40 to fix)
Got a sqeual on brakes (needs looking at as pads and discs fine)
Occassional smell of fumes in cabin on acceleration (again taking in to get sorted soon)

That's as much help as i can be. Sorry! It's your choice really.

Audi speaks for its self really! Great cars, can cost a lot to buy and maintain.

    Chris

    Hi Hagis,

Many thanks for your response. I did not ask if the gear box fluid has been changed, but that's a very good point to note. when I went through the service manual, there were no indications that the gear box fluid was changed, so I'll quickly ask.

    Hi Chris,

Yes, Audi is a lovely car, and it's one of my favourite cars. My main concern is the many complaints people have about this Audi's multitronic gear box. They are expensive to replace if it become faulty. It's quite strange though, because I know of my friend's automatics (not multitronics) that never had any problem even when the car has run more than 600 thousand km. For me, I find it a bit disturbing that of all things in the car, the gear box is what I should expect to replace after a few thousand km.
Your points are noted anyway. Thanks.

    Gabe

I bought an a4 cab 04 with the multitronics gearbox about a month ago and it's been great.Read the threads on this website to get all the faults, and if you can get a long a warranty as possible.
The only problems I've found so far is that with my 1.8 engine on hill starts it tend to roll back,so I just gas it a bit. Also I have triptonic on the steering wheel a turning the corner one handed as I tend to do it does which on and go into 1st gear. When you are putting your foot down to get away you wonder what's going on.
Things like that might put an extra strain on the box,but I feel if driven sensibly and if you change to manual switch the gears in the right rev range, you should enjoy having the option of both automatic and manual.
    I Love it.
