    Hi Guys,

    I have a VW Passat 1.9TDI(Red DI)SE, Xreg.

I have currently been putting in £40 worth of diesel. I am getting aroung 320-330 Miles from it, some motoway driving and city driving, Is that bad? Also how many miles should i be getting with £40.

Can anyone give me some tips on saving fuel? I'm not too clued up with cars.

    Thanks in advance.

Well, it all depends on how much you are paying for diesel, how fast you are travelling on the motorway and how heavy your foot is in the city.

Assuming a diesel price of 106.9ppl then your MPG is around 40MPG, which assuming your car is healthy means you like to drive "enthusiastically".

Bear in mind that cold weather knocks MPG as does the winter diesel formula, so I don't think you that far from the mark.

Thanks for the help mate! that shed's alot of light on my questions. I dont have a heavy foot anymore, i think those days are over. lol unless the prices go down. I didnt know that the weather would effect it.

But one other question? what do you mean by "enthusiastically"?

    Hmmm, "enthusiastically"....

Well, by that I mean do you like to rev the motor a little more than is absolutely necessary?

BTW another reason for reduced fuel economy in winter is that you use more power to run headlights, heater and the heated rear screen etc.

at 50mpg you should be getting 415miles from diesel at that price.

my motor easily does 50mpg but that is based on dashbord readouts.

over the course of the year, on my daily journey to work, I will get between 50-75mpg depending on daylight and external temp conditions

are you not able to use dash board readings to guage mpg?

Well, how often have you achieved an actual 50MPG?

I did it once in a car that had only 20k on it.

The dashboard computer is a blatant liar in many cases as the factory don't tune its setting correctly on manufacture.

my 1.9tdi AHU engine easily does 50mpg ,150k miles on clock

most of my figs are dashboard but are bourne out by long journies in france where car was fuelled at start and end of motorway drive. calcs from visa receipts confirm 55mpg over 410miles at 60mph car well loaded,no roof rack.

recent dover hull journey gave 70+mpg. did question that here but few responses regarding computer accuracy

My dashboard comp is slightly optimistic.

I always do a calculation at every fill-up to get actual figures.

My normal average is around 45MPG (actual) or 47 (comp), driving carefully.

I previously had a Pug 406Hdi which used to read 5mpg under.

My mpg has been down recently, but recent threads would suggest that it could be due to winter diesel.

Another interesting worm in the can is how you brake also affects your fuel economy keep jamming them on and your mpg goes down.ed
