    Hi all,

I bought an A3 2.0 FSI at the beginning of the year with 65K on the clock. I've done about 400 miles in it since then and its now developed a ticking sound when idling. It's also putting out a lot of exhaust - more than seems normal.

Has anyone else experienced this? Any ideas what it could be?

    Cheers

Hello mate, does this ticking sound happen when you rev the car from idol and sometimes about 3sec after starting car? If so i have the same with my a3 1.8t, I have been told its a sensor that recirculates unused exhausts gasses back in 2 the system and the clicking noise is the sensor working. Hope this helps.

Thanks mate - it sounds like it could be that but it wasn't doing it when I first bought it and to be honest, it doesn't sound healthy. The link you've sent suggests its normal.

I've noticed today that it does it when it's idle, but sporadically. It's not in any rhythm, just random.

It's going into garage tomorrow so I'll keep you posted.

    Good idea!

No, seriously though - it's back from garage and although they haven't found the problem , they have figured out that if you turn off the climate control, the noise goes away. Their first guess is the climate control pump. They advise that I let it get worse so that they can be sure it's that before starting any work. The noise is definitely coming from that area of the engine bay though apparently.

So, I guess I'll have to live with it. Might take it down the Volkswagen dealer tomorrow and see if one of their techies will take a quick look. Probably charge me for the privilege but worth it for peace of mind.

I'll keep posting on here if I get some useful information.

    Cheers
