Yes, sorry for being so green, I just need to put an explanation (if it was different) in the vehicle's service history.

The bit I was not sure about was whether it was just on the VIN plate = current log book match or actually on a part of the A4 1.9 TDi engine that the *Base Unit* (i.e. that part number I quoted) would be expected to fully replace with the swop.

i.e New base unit = complete engine, new number, right?

many thanks for your help, I am very grateful!

All you need to do is change the engine then send the V5 off to the dvla with the new engine number. Whats gone wrong with the old lump then?

Whats the damage? They can be fixed you know, as long as the rod hasn't snapped and broke the cylinder block.

I have some rods for your engine if it is only bent rods!

Thats very kind, it was a submerse unfortunately, no its knackered I'm consisdering options. Ive had it looked at and a swop was the best path suggested.

I know its a follow-up question but I have not got anywhere with web searches on where to find the stamped-in number on the metal itself. Can you drop us a hint fof where to shine my torch?

    Ta again.

I've never looked to be honest! Take a look at the link.

Left is the cam-belt area, right is gearbox.

It's where the oil filter housing is located.
