I have a 96 1.9 diesel with the 1Y engine. The service indicator doesn't work quite like the Haynes Book of Lies suggests. I'm not clear if it automatically sets the next service interval, or do I need to select, say the 4,000 mile oil service after I have done an oil change?

With ignition switched on, press the trip reset button below the speedometer and hold this down whilst you switch off the ignition and then release the trip button. The word “OEL” (German for Oil) will be indicated in the display. Press the minute button of the digital clock (the lower one) until five dashes (-----) appear. Pressing the button again below the speedometer will bring up the next service indicator and these can be reset individually. Switch the ignition on and if “IN 00” appears, which means no service is required, then switch off. OEL means it needs an oil change. IN01 is the annual service and IN02 is the bi-annual service. If you have IN01 displayed, clear this and then turn the ignition off and back on again to see what comes back and then clear that, which will probably be OEL.

Muchas gracias. I'm approaching the next oil change but it still says IN 00, so I'll wait till it pops up.
