    Hello there!

Have recently been looking into this issue, and thought this looked like the forum that might help me!

We've recently picked up a 1998 A3 1.8 Sport - My wife only drives AUTO, so we had to pick it up with an Auto Box. What I'm wondering is if it's physically possible to drop the Tiptronic Box from the 96/97/98 A4 into the A3? That way, we'd have a full Auto mode for the wife, and I'd have some kind of control over the gear changes when I'm driving.. Not too much to ask, I don't think!

Any info, ideas or even comments would be appreciated. Obviously "Get a Manual" doesn't count as constructive!

I'm also wondering about adding the Turbo to the 1.8 - Relatively simple job, or a complete PITA?

    Much appreciated!

    No.

the A3 is a transverse installation, the A4 is in-line. the two are fundimentally different.

    That's a damn shame..

Still, not a complete disaster I suppose.. Will just have to live with the auto 'box, though if I'm honest, it's a bit of a dog..

How about the Turbo on the 1.8? Simple job, or pain in the ****? I've added an aftermarket turbo to the Honda D16 in the past, and that was a relatively simple job, so while I'm no mechanical expert by any means, I'm certainly not completely useless either..

if you were to turbo your existing engine, i think you would need a whole new top end of the engine, exhaust and ecu, not a lot of fun to fit!

However, i think stormdevelopments.co.uk make a supercharger kit for the non turbo a3, it could be worth dropping them a wee email to see. If they do let me know please as i may be interested in it for my own a3. thanks

    hope this helps,
