My '02 Golf is due a new set of tyres due to the inside 15mm being as bald as the palm of my hand while the rest of the tyre has about 2mm tread left.

Question is, what should I look at? Is it likely to just be tracking? (Steering wheel is straight when driving straight) both tyres are showing the same wear, so I suspect it isn't suspension wear.

What should I do? Also, would I be better getting a VW place to track it or would a regular garage be able to do the job (properly)

Also, been offered Avons at 40 quid each including fitting and balancing (not sure which model of tyre this is though) Anyone got any experience with these?
I dont drive hard, but at the same time I dont want tyres that are going to be dangerous especially in the wet.

Firstly, in my experience, Avon are one of, if not THE worst "Premium" Brand tyre for excessive road noise, and un-even wear.

It does sound like your wheel alignment is out, has your Golf been Lowered? Could also be camber.

You wont always necessarily notice your steering wheel being off-centre when your tracking is out. If you want to get a better deal, go to your local independant tyre dealer (use friends for reccomendations). You'll find that they will do just as good a job as the main dealer.

Also, insist on seing the pre and post wheel alignment readings to avoid paying for a service that you dont need.
