    Hi,

I own a 99 Golf gti 1.8T and yesterday I put my foot on the clutch to change gear and "CRACK" bits of plastic everywhere. The pedal stuck down to the floor and cant go anywhere.

Does anyone know the name of the part I need?

same appears to have happened tonight to mine, have got access to pedal and a bit seems to have sheared off the front of pedal.............the black plastic bit and white bit are also broken.............is it relatively simple to replace the pedal, any special tools required etc etc and is there a diagram anywhere of how the black and white plastic bit go on the actual pedal.
    Cheers.

New pedal and clip but often the master cylinder rod bends and may need at least straightening or even replacing which is an awkward job but the pedal is easy.

Just out of curiosity, how much did you pay to have this sorted?

I ended up paying £45 for the parts, and a further £125 (after haggling) for labour. Labour was a rip-off though (in my opinion), but I paid it as I needed the car back on the road asap.

Hi, paid £100 for parts and labour. Parts being roughly what you said. Seems you paid a lot for labour.

    Hi,
New to the forum and have a quetsion regarding the above problem.
This happened to me on my 1999 Golf IV GTI. The first time was about two months ago where the clip snapped. I got it recovered, took it to a garage and they replaced the clip. Picked it up the next day, same happened again with the new clip about an hour later. Recovered again to the same garage and they said the master cylinder rod was bent, so they replaced that and obviously new clip as well.
All has been fine for two months until yesterday. This time the clutch clip just popped off. When RAC arrived, he tried to reconnect it, which he did, however he pushed the clutch in with his hand and it snapped again. It's currently in the garage waiting to be seen on monday.
Could there be any other explanation for this happening again, even after a new master cylinder, or am I just unlucky?
Thanks in advance to anyone that can help.
    Joe

They didn’t notice that the pedal was broken. The clip is backed by a metal tag that is just bent over and this has failed, just fitting a new clip will not work, in fact if it was a six speed (the clutch is much heavier) it would fail instantly. You need a new pedal and a new clip plus at this rate, a new master cylinder again.
