whining noise

just got my bora 130bhp highline on a 55 plate,i have noticed a type of whining nose coming from the front end.its not loud but enough to bug me ,its not always present but appears to be there when slowing down.i have taken it out of gear and coasted to a slow down(still there) then accelerated and it seems to stop.The car has almost new tyres, so i am thinking it could be them on the road surface but cant make my mind up.its under warranty anyway so i am not bothered about repair bills just thought someone might of come across this before.although my old bora never made this type of noise.any thoughts will be appreciated.thanks tony

I have the exact same problem with my 1998 Audi A3. The problem started when the diff in my gearbox went. I sent the gearbox away to be reconditioned but when I got it back it was doing exactly what you explained. The whining noise is there when I slow down, the noise is worse when slowing down in gear but present when out of gear too and the whining noise goes away when accelerating.

I reckon it's your diff and if your car is still in warranty then you should have no problem getting a replacement gearbox; if not in warranty a reconditioned gearbox supplied and fitted could potentially cost you £850 - £900.
