    Hi all

This is my first topic so hope all is well

I recently bought a golf gt tdi 140 and its perfect as i do 500 miles a week, now the problem i have is that on the accelerator and off the accelerator (I.E. engine breaking) i get what can only be described as a howling around the 1200-1400rpm range, now my friend as the exact same golf and his doesn't do this noise??????? it sounds like some sort of restriction on the air intake?????? also have a slight judder on idle although VAG have told me that my car has been checked for the dreaded DMF problem and was OK, also what brand of oil would you reccommed for the 10,000 interval service?????

sorry its a long post just my warranty runs out in 4 weeks and I want to get all the jobs done

    cheers

    Jason

Hi I have the exact same problem too on my wifes 2004 Golf gt tdi which now has 90k. Also can you enlighten me to what DMF stands for ?

DMF = Dual Mass Flywheel - its to do with the clutch.

ref the howling. take it to the dealer and ask that a techy comes with you so you can demonstrate.

Also, if you tell them that your warranty is due to expire soon, would they inspect the car so anything that needs replacing can be replaced. Is it due a service or MOT? if so get it done before the warranty expires.

thanks for the reply, I bought mine from Arnold Clarke who I think are complete Noobs regards VW so do you think i should go to VW and make out that my warranty is with them?????

Also how reliable are VW UK as they say my car has been checked for the DMF fault and it's ok, although I still get the rumbling on idle when warm, but not when i first startup

    cheers

Hey, I've got the same problem with my 1.9 TDi Mk5 SE. i took it to VW and had them come out with me on a test drive. the mechanic (sorry, computer technician) heard the noise but couldn't think where it was come, he seemed to think it was the turbo when i thought it was coming from the exhaust. he took the car in and had the computer run a few tests but came back with no diagnosis. he said he took it for a second test drive and the noise had gone away. I've now got the car again and the noise has come back. the only thing i can think of is that my car is alive and knows when it is in the garage. lol.
Have you managed to figure out the problem yet or do you still get the noise?
    Dan

Arnold Clarke seem to think its the turbo and assure me they are getting a new one from VW to replace, should make a bit of a dent in the profit they made from me

    Hey there,

For your info, Arnold Calrks warranty is valid at VW garages, or at least it was at Specialist Cars in Aberdeen, may be worth asking the question because then you know that a VW tech has been playing with the guts of your engine not some spotty little oik who knows nothing!! (Sorry to any Arnold Clark "Mechanics" reading this but I had nothing but trouble with them with my last Golf!!).

is the warranty available at VW even if I didnt take out a warranty??? mine is just the 30 days warranty they give on all cars sold????

As for how they came up with the diagnosis that it was the turbo was 3 trips to them and a lot of ear bashing....first said there was no noise that was concerning them????? so I took the head monkey out on test drive to show him, and also they had another GTTDI in the show room with 3x more miles than mine and that was a lot quieter

Ahh... that I'm not sure on, I took out there extended year long warranty, best £500 I ever spent!! Must've got about £1000 or more done on it!!

You can but ask the question at VW!!

I know it's not much consolation now but I woudn't touch Arnie Sharks with a barge pole. Could be worth asking if they'll give you the extended warranty, I cannot emphasise how much of a relief it was that I had it, especially when my water pump went, I got the timing belt changed at the same time and it only caost me £60 as opposed to £300!!!!
