Hi all, I have recently purchased a '03 passat 1.8t.
On startup it is gives a slightly diesely noise, which dissapears quickly after about 30 seconds. Is this something to worry about? Car has good service history, 34,000 miles.
Drives well and gives good power, better than other 1.8t I have driven.
It also seems to make a little more whoosh from the turbo, I understand the car has only original parts.

    Thanks for any replies.
    Kind regards,
    Martin

ooops! thanks for the reply... I think!
Defo some of the noise is from airbox area.
She has a little bit of high frequency clack around the head (faster than worn tappet sound) I have heard this can be a cam chain tensioner issue.
Got that from a US site.... do 1.8t have a chain rather than belt???

I'm pretty sure the 1.8T hasn't a chain - I've got the older model (2000) 1.8T and that just has a belt and tensioner.

Thanks for the replies guys, think I should bring it in for a main dealer service soon, previous owner had it serviced v. recently by an ex VW mechanic, who described the car as faultless... but better safe than sorry, and the only harm will be to my wallet.

My 2003 2.0 always sounds a bit diesel like. I keep checking the badge on the rear just to make sure.
