Even if you drive at motorway speed in cold weather like we are having, the radiator will cool that much that the thermostat will just shut again (hence a cold bottom pipe again) because there is no water flow going through it.

I also thought there was a problem at first but soon found out it is very normal on these engines.

By the sounds of it, you do a lot of driving with you being a taxi. If there was something wrong you would surly know about it by now.
thanks for your reply mate i do have a problem i dont know if its related to the cooling system but with the problem im having it seems to point in that direction either the cooling system or some sensor associated with it but it does seem a bit strange( i can drive for hours on end and i do put my foot down a bit )that it doesnt heat the hoses and theres no pressure in the header tank but too be honest its my first vw and the technology in these cars is way out of my league

The bottom hose and expansion tank being cold are normal ime a taxi driver myself and i did a dover wait & return,on long jobs i check my fluids before i return and my expansion tank was tepid after 306 miles at 85 mph, this is not the prob.It sounds to me like its a electrical connection (dry joint),what i would advise is to disconnect the battery, remove engine cover then spray every connector block with wd 40 do all the sensors on ur rad, temp sensor, maf sensor, everything leave the battery disconeccted for at least 2 hrs (make sure u have ur radio code) then see how it goes
