Don't take this as your car is ok but more of something to think about.
If your heater is on the heater will be dumping the excess heat into the car interior, Bills Passat is ok if he has the heater on, its when the main rad is needed he has problems.

And what problems exactly is bill having caldirun?

His bottom hose is staying cold and the header tank water is also staying cold! This is very normal on PD tdi car in this cold weather. HELL, He's a taxi driver (and still not broke down)

No, it dosn't tell you that in the haynes . LOL.

12 MPH by my reckoning, no wonder your bottom hose was cold, I could run that without taking my jog bottoms off. Turn your heater off and take it for a real drive, that'll warm your hose up.
To see Bills probs, it helps to read his posts before replying!, GF
Have you something against Haynes manuals, are you one of those who presses all the buttons before reading the instructions?

Passat>sport is correct in what he is saying. The VW tdi have a very good design in which the thermostat stays shut (especially in cold weather) for long periods of time. Even if you drive at motorway speed in cold weather like we are having, the radiator will cool that much that the thermostat will just shut again (hence a cold bottom pipe again) because there is no water flow going through it.

I also thought there was a problem at first but soon found out it is very normal on these engines.

By the sounds of it, you do a lot of driving with you being a taxi. If there was something wrong you would surly know about it by now.

I can only guess it's so that if you want to lower them a bit while reversing they both go down? No idea why really, but they all seem to do it.

i did break down one night mate was driving normal and it just quit had 2 passengers in and had to radio for another taxi i was embarased to say the least it wasnt overheating but it took a good hour to get it started by then it had cooled down but since i blanked off the egr it starts everytime but i get no response from the throttle for a few seconds it does this every time but when i put my heaters on it starts no problem every time i thought id try putting the heater on cold and the car still started and i thought well it must be electrical but then it started acting up again so its got to be on hot and its got to be on at least four bars so its got to be something to do with the cooling system i would of thought theres no fault codes at all everyone who looks at it dont have a clue i dont know what to do next its got me totally fed up an auto electrician put a resistor in one of the four wires on the coolant temp sensor and it started everytime he said it was telling the ecu that the engine was colder than it actually was the only problem was i was gettin 100 mile for 20 quid so i took it off even the electrician didnt know why it worked ok with a resistor in but it still goes back to the cooling system if the pump and thermostat are ok what else on the cooling side can cause a fault like that the *********** have admitted they havent got a clue they said ecu fault so i changed it and it was no different more cash down the drain cheers for all your comments lads i would love to fix it its a real mystery
