thanks for the reply mate you got me thinking now, deep down i get the feeling there is something wrong with the pump ,its as if the water isnt circulating properly i wish i knew for definate if it was the pump a mechanic told me the only way to know is by stripping it cheers bill

Bill, For heat to enter the heater matrix inside the car it needs to be pumped there by the water pump. There is absolutely no way you would get internal heat if the impeller has detached as you thought in your other thread.

Maybe there is something wrong, but I very much doubt it is the pump!

Have you tried running it with the thermostat removed, if the stat is not opening the water will not flow into the rad, just around the engine and heater matrix. If you remove the top hose from the rad (when engine is cold) if the thermostat is out and the pump is working water should gush from the pipe.

thanks caldirun it makes sense what your saying because thats exactly what mine is doing ,engine and matrix getting hot rad bottom hose and expansion tank seem to stay cold it also makes sense what passat>sport says too if the pump wasnt workin the heater matrix would not heat up thank you both, can you tell me where the thermostat is and how difficult it is to change cheers bill

Bill as I told you before, the bottle and bottom hose do stay cold. In this weather the thermostat rarely opens.

I have the same engine in my audi, I'm going to test it for you in the morning on the way to work. and I bet the header tank and bottom hose are still cold when I do a ten mile journey.

Follow the top hose from the rad, the stat housing should be at the end of it, looks as though it is between the oil filter housing and the head. Only 2 screws when you find it though.
If you have not bought one yet, you really need a workshop manual, I bought a Haynes, only £15, pays for itself on the first job you do.

It was not leaking, the impeller has detached so it was not spinning.

Bill, I drove to work today (9 miles approx) got stuck in the morning traffic, so took about 45 mins to get there.

Guess what! the bottom hose and header tank bottle water were still cold. Temp gauge was reading half way.

Don't take this as your car is ok but more of something to think about.
