Hi everyone, I have an Audi A4 Avant 1.9 tdi 130 and have engine problems when starting. When I start the car it automatically cuts out strainght away after firing, unless I keep my foot down on the accelerator and rev it for a second to about 3500 revs. Also maybe linked the engine feels rough and slightly jerky when driving, but no power loss felt.

Any help with this problem would be much appreciated as Audi have no idea of the problem and want to charge £400+ to locate its fault.

When was the fuel filter last changed? Believe it or not these PD engines can do some funny stuff when the filter is getting plugged up.

The last time I changed mine, symptoms were driving from cold for 2 mile to the traffic lights, it would cut out then restart. Untill it cut out one day and never restarted. (A new filter cured all)

BTW, Audi would not get a fault code for this!

Audi changed the fuel filter around 6 months ago, well they say they did. - I haven't found the Cambridge dealer that helpful and their knowledge is a little lacking. Any advise you can give is greatly appreciated as I have changed the coolant temperature sensor. No change - Also Audi say that the car is showing no computer faults

To me if no fault codes are logged it must be mechanical!

Either fuel filter or tandem pump! Fuel filters get plugged very easy due to the carbon deposits from the in-tank lift pump bushes. (or so I'm told) I've opened up a few to find they go compleatly black inside.

Just try the filter to elimanate it. Also rub your finger on the underside of the tandem pump to see if it is leaking from the gasket or seal.
You could also be getting some kind of diesel air-lock

Thanks! I will try changing the fuel filter and check the tandem pump. Its an inexpensive fix if it solves the problem so thanks for your advice.

Make sure you fill the new filter with diesel before starting! They can be a pig to get going otherwise.

I fill my filters with some stuff called "diesel purge" It gives the injectors a good clean at the same time.
