Hi, If you remove the boot carpet behind the fuel filler, you will see a motor which controls your fuel filler door. Unscrew the motor (2 screws) and manually pull the rod. THis should release the fuel filler door ( based on a Passat 1999 model saloon ) as it happened to me too.

i have the opposite problem, I own a passat 2.0 53 reg, the problem is - the fuel filler door won't close and the trunk door won't close. This appears to have started after I had my car washed with a power spray, I dont know if that would be connected in any way, anyone out there got any ideas? Thanks, andy h

Please keep away from pressure sprays they can cause a lot of damage especially if the are aimed near door and boot locks and find their way into your electrics.

Its a shame that some people don't hand wash their own ar anymore.
