My golf is due for a new timing -belt. Currently on 118k, i will be getting the full timing -belt kit, which includes the water pump and tensioners. I was wondering how much it would cost for parts/labour. my local garage (which is not a VW specialists) is asking for £220. Is that a fair price??

That should be an AUS engine and the interval is still 4 years or 60k as far as I am concerned. They are not particularly easy to do as they have two belts, one to drive the inlet cam and one to drive the exhaust cam form the inlet cam. One thing on that engine, please only use 99RON octane fuel, i.e. Shell V power or Tesco 99, otherwise you will burn out an exhaust valve but 97RON is an acceptable alternative. If you look inside your fuel filler cap it says Min octane 98/95 RON and that means normal 95RON fuel in exceptional circumstances only.

There are a few links on this site about this problem. If you look inside your fuel filler flap you will see a sticker. On this it will say something like minimum octane 98/95. What this means is the fuel you put in must be at least 95RON octane (what you put in at Asda) but preferably 98RON which is currently unavailable in the UK. What is available is 97RON (BP Ultimate, Texaco Exeliwotsit), Esso Supreme etc) or 99RON and that is only available from Tesco and Shell as V Power. VW's official view on this is "98 unleaded (in exceptional circumstances min. 95 RON, however with reduced performance)" BUT the 105PS engines that need this fuel (not just the AUS but also the many other versions) are suffering from exhaust valve seat burning problems at around 60K miles.
