VW Sharan code 550 and white smoke

Ok where to start . got a call to look at a p reg sharan 140k miles . new glow plugs that have been bypassed to a seperat switch on dash seems to work ok. turbo fitted 3 weeks ago ( old one seized) cam belt changed 20k ago .
Car just starts sounds like on 3 cylinders for a while with loads of white smoke and you can smell diesel in it . after a while about 2 -3 miles it clears .
There is lack of power when smoking but when clear drives ok.
Passed a mot emmisions at 0.3
connected scanner found code 550 injection start up intermittant
any ideas
I work on diesels but not normally this small

That is a possibly a pump timing or valve timing problem, or both. You need to lock the cam and pump with the crank on zero and see if it lines up. If it does, you should check the Commencement Of Injection. Which diagnostic computer are you using? Does it show live data?

It does seem like a timing fault just seems weird that it clears after a while .
Checked code with snap on scanner and it only showed code might be able to get my hands on a modus but not until monday. the car is outside customers house so it sounds like this is going to get involved so i will get it to my workshop on monday
