    Fellow Passat-Masters...

Does anyone know or can confirm how the glove box light is switched on and off..?

My guess is that it's one of the plunger switches around the edge of the compartment, but when I push them in the light remains on.

Can someone please pop out to their car and have a quick reccy for me...?!!

Basically I need to know which one it is (left/right hand side), or if indeed the circuit is switched by plungers.

    Cheers

Any chance you can have a look at your glovebox when you get a minute..? I am taking it into the dealers on Thursday and want to tell them what's wrong with it so I don't end up going wasting my time...

Also, I notice that you have got an iPod link. Is it the VW Dealer fit type..? (cable hanging down from top of glovebox)

Just asking 'cos I am just about to post a question as I don't think they are very good and wondered if anyone else thought the same... For example...The track names aren't shown, and when I press the arrow keys to jump back and forward through the tracks, there is a delay, and it more often than not plays a second of the track, goes off, then comes back on... really annoying..!!!!

    Cheers

I'm just about to set off to get my car so I'll look later.

The iPod link is an Xcarlink which is an aftermarket one - it doesn't show tracknames either. I've trailed the cable so my ipod sits in the cupholder which is handier than being in the glovebox, I might extend the cable next month so I can fit it neatly in the storage box.

It doesn't, however, play a bit of music, then stop - it's pretty good apart from not showing track names.

Sorry, I forgot to mention why I am asking about the light switching..!!

OK - I left my car at Manchester airport for 8 nights and when I returned it wouldn't start... Flat battery...

As the car is only 6 months old I was concerned as to why the battery had discharged... Anyway after messing about I suspect the light in the glovebox is staying on, hence the flat battery. As I use the car daily I probably wouldn't notice the effects of it being on all night, but over 8 days it could drain the battery...

So..... this is why I would like to know how the circuit is switched... (so i can also tell the main dealer on Thursday... lead them right up to the front door, etc..!)

Whilst I am on, I might as well give you a tip... If you leave your car in the short stay car multi-story park at terminal 3 Manchester, remember that if you need to call VW Assistance, the van will not fit inside the building... The ceilings are too low..!!

I think I can leave the rest to your imagination..!!!

Not sure what the problem is regarding battery discharge BUT have just played with the glovebox and I don't think they are switches just shock absorbers for the glovebox.

The only way I could get the glovebox light to turn off was to set the alarm whilst I was still in the car.

There appeared to be an audible click of what sounded like a small relay in the vicinity of the glovebox when the light turned off

    LeFrog...

Many thanks for having a look in your glove-box for me, much appreciated.

I have actually had the car back at the dealers today, and they have confirmed that the switch had been incorrectly fitted. I am assuming that the switch must be buried someone in either the catch mechanism, or it is switched “behind the scenes”.

Also, I think you are right, the 2 plungers around the aperture are actually just damping springs, possible to prevent rattles, and not the light switch.

you talking about your battery discharging, maybe you just have a dead cell in the battery, which inturn drains the healthy battery cells, giving you a dead battery. Its a high proberbility that u just need a need battery and thats all that needs looking at. I used to be in the trade, so do know alittle.

You're not the first for this to happen to - seems there can be a mystery current drain as features stay alive when they should have shut off. iirc one person was quoted as having a problem with the radio that was continuing on (in some kind of background mode) when TIM was enabled.

Have a search on http://forums.vwvortex.com/zeroforum?id=728 details were posted there. Good luck with the crappy search function though!
