Drive belt noise

I've got a 1996 1.9 non turbo diesel, 1Y engine. Shortly after I bought it, about a year ago, the ribbed drive belt that serves the alternater and water pump started slipping. I renewed the belt with a cheap one from my local accessory shop. A couple of weeks ago, the belt was noisy again so I replaced it with a belt from Halfords. Guess what - it's started to squeak when cold, though it quietens down as soon as it warms a bit. Any ideas?

Now squealing quite a bit on startup. The tensioner on this engine is a spring on the alternator mounting. Could this have weakened?

You need to change the tensioners and rollers mate. You should always do this when changing the belt, otherwise you risk the new belt failing. Sometimes, the auxillary belt coming off, can take the timing belt off, and thats a whole load of trouble you don't want for the bother of a few quid
