    a friend of mine is after a b5 passat for around a £1000 told not to expect a lot but what model would be the best buy?
    told i think a diesel is out of the question with this budget and after only having tdi,s myself there nothing much i know about the petrol model.

    any info guys

    Hi, for that budget, i would look for a 1.6 or a 1.8 NON turbo. They are both cheap to insure and wont cost the earth to fix...but, the 1.8 is a much complicated motor to start with: it has few more sensors and extra components. The 1.6 is much simpler and might feel underpowered. However, the 1.6 puts about 115 Bhp and the 1.8 about 130 Bhp, and the 1.6 will drink a bit more petrol. Look for water in the plenum chamber, working central locking/electric windows, noisy wishbones/brakes/bushes and working heater control. Pay atention in particular to the AC/ Climate Control if fitted, as they are known for flaps blocking and expensive to fix !
