    Hi. despite owning numerous golfs, audis and transporters over the years and they have generally been problem free. However, my dad has an 02 passat saloon which has just developed a problem.

    The bootlid won't stay closed. No matter how hard you slam it or how gently you close it, it just won't catch. The problem arose last night but we did eventually get it to close and lock.

    On his way to work this morning, my dad noticed the display telling him that the bootlid was open. It kept coming on as he drove and driving over bumps seemed to make it come and go. On arriving at work, the tailgate was open but due to the weight of it, it hadn't opened fully.

    We have locked it in our garage this evening and locked car with remote. If we set alarm with the bootlid just resting as if closed the alarm sets ok but if we open bootlid the alarm is triggered. I guess it must be triggered by the boot light coming on.

    Please can anyone help as at the moment we cannot leave the car anywhere that is not secure? any help or advice would be gratefully received.

    Thanks Kev and Dad.

    I will try and help. Firstly i would use a screwdriver or something similar and engage and then release the boot lock a few times to make sure that part is working okay.

    If it is, then it could be that the two parts ie the latch and the loop are not physically coming into contact with each other and one of them has come lose and slipped, requiring you to relocate it and then tighten it up (would be nice wouldnt it)

    could be water ingress messing around with your boot release.
    let me know.

    Fozzie!

    hi fozzie. I've already had a quick look today using a screwdriver and it appears to be the latch on the bootlid itself. I was going to investigate further but after finding out that its only £13 from dealers, I've ordered one to eliminate at least. Unfortunately I rang about 1pm and I missed the afternoon delivery so won't be able to fit until Monday.

    Thanks for your advice anyway and I'll let you know what the result is.

    Cheers Kev.

    I have had the exact same problem with my boot lid. In the end it was very simple to fix. Just take the trim off the boot lid and take off the actual catch unit. The plastic surround comes off easily, and then just re attach the end of the spring to the little stud (you will see what i mean easily). This then enables the catch to spring back allowing the boot to latch.

    I am pretty sure but you sound not need the new latch. It took me 10 minutes to fix..

    Let me know if you have any problems. Oh and you will need som torx head drivers to get all the bits off.

    Tom.

    thanks for the interest shown. The part came today so I stripped interior boot panel off and removed the mechanism. The small spring inside was broken and loose inside catch. All you need to do once panel is removed is undo two 10mm nuts, unplug the power cable from the micro switch and undo the linkage from the wire cable. You will need to swap the micro switch from the old catch to the new one. I fitted the new complete catch and its working fine. The part number is 3B5 827 505 M and with trade discount and VAT the total was £14.19. A simple and cheap solution for a change.

    Thanks again.

    Kev.

    Bit of a hijack sorry......

    The exact same thing happened to me,(01 Passat) I have just replaced the unit ..... All is working OK BUT the boot cannot be opened from the outside, as in it wont pop.. It opens fine using the switch on the door and remotely using the key... Im thinking its the micro switch.. All connectors seem secure....... Any Ideas ?

    -> So be gentle !!

    Hi.
    can't say for definate whats wrong but if it works on the key-remote and the bootlid itself, i would investigate the switch on the drivers door. Maybe a broken wire in the drivers door wiring loom or the bootlid wiring loom.
    I know Mk3 golfs used to suffer with broken wires because they are so thin, and earlier audis also had problems with broken wires in their bootlid wiring.
    Sorry I can't be of more help.
    Kev.
