If no smoke at all! I would disregard the pump and/or timing and the injectors. Sounds like an internal engine failure. (but could be something else) Do a recording of the noise and post it on www.youtube.com and the link to it on here.

You need to re-check your cam timing with a cam alignment plate and pump sprocket pin against the flywheel 0 mark. If this is OK, then check the Commencement Of Injection with VAG-COM. Do you have VAG-COM?
