Has just had service, but now the light is flashing and the car juddering with loss of power.

Does this sound like the Lambda Probe?

If so - has anyone had this before (taking it to dealership0 is it a costly job?

Sounds very much to me like the cat is braking down but why suddenly just after a service? Any engine misfires prior to service? Not tow-started it or bump started it?

If it is a 1.2L 3 cylinder model the two common problems that spring to mind are timing chain jump which is very common just after an oil change but this normally stops the engine or that they have cleared a fault code and upset the EGR valve adaptation. If a fault code read gives a code for the MAP sensor (what VW call a thrust sensor) then the EGR valve needs readapting, a new MAP sensor will not cure it.

Can someone please explain why the car should not be tow started od bump started = and what happens to the electrics - especially when the battery is very nearly flat?

Tow starting the car can lead to un-burnt fuel pooling in the cat which can then ignite if the enggine starts but I have only ever heard of this once, to a friend of mine, whilst the car was in a hay barn with his other cars and the hose he ran out to put out the flames would not reach.

I took it to my local VW dealership in Newcastle upon Tynes Silverlink.
They did the usual diagnostics and found a faulty coil pack.
(sorry -i dont actually know what this is?)
Anyway -the car was a year out of warranty - However VW sorted this out 100% goodwill so no charge at all.

The garage said that sometimes this happens, but its 50/50 whether VW actually forfeit the charge.

    The dealership were fantastic

Hello there, i have brought to me a VW Polo 1.3 3cyl. There problem reoported the MAP sensor which it wasn't. The light is on and there is a distint rattle (i am still dignising down). Can you be a more spacific about the problem or information you have? i needed some independant advice re this car. Nobody seems to be able to give me information. Have spoke to VW technical department via customer services. They insist there is no common fault!!!!!
What is the EGR valve? what adaption? any help would be great...trying to peace differant information together.

    Thanks C

What do you mean by rattling? How much more specific do you want me to be, measuring blocks, basic settings codes, adaptation groups? Do you have VAG-COM.

    No i don't have VAG-COM.

Sorry if i have ofended you. I a a former Nissan servive manager and to be honest never did like VW's. That said i am learning about them as i go.

    Problem

1 the computor light is on with a code that sates its a MAP sensor. (New part bought and put on vehicle, it didn't work.

2 Reported rattling-this i have now check out and the rattle is slight ? missfire through the plenum chamber (inlet throttle houseing) that indeed does sound like a rattle. I have a VW mechanic mate and he is as stumped as me. There are simlar problems here, i i am cluching at straws.

The EGR valve- Exhaust Gas Recirculation - You state the "EGR needs readapting" what does this mean? can the unit be serviced, can it be reconfigured, cleaned? any info would be good.

    Ta C

No you haven’t offended me, that is the problem with text, but not liking VW’s could offend me-ALL MUST BE CONVERTED, like it or not!

Anyway, the MAP sensor code happens on these when people clear the adaptations and so the EGR valve has to be re-adapted. For this you need a proper registered copy of VAG-COM.
