    Hi

I wouldn't say there is much, if any difference, in wear properties of 505.01 and 507.00. 507.00 oils tend to meet the newer specifications (not just VW specs, but Merc, BMW etc as well), but the 505.01 oils have high levels of antiwear additives. 507.00 oils are designed for long life service intervals and low emissions vehicles, 505.01 are for standard intervals in PD engines (so generally not low emissions). Unless you are covering a lot of miles, I would change the oil at 10k/annually and use either the 505.01 or 507.00. If it burns a drop of oil, 505.01 is often the better option as they are usually 5w-40, so a little thicker than the 0w-30/5w-30 507.00 oils. If covering a lot of miles, 507.00 is sensible. The problem with the long life service intervals and not doing a lot of miles is that if the oil doesn't get hot enough to evaporate off any fuel and water in it, there is a build up and that ruins the oil.

505.01 - VW / Volkswagen 505.01 Semi & Fully Synthetic Car Engine Oil
    507.00 - VW / Volkswagen 507.00 5w30 Fully Synthetic Car Engine Oil

    Cheers

Thank you for your elaborate and very useful post Tim, will check out my local dealer and see what they have in stock from your link. Any specific brand you can recommend from the list for PD 1.9 tdi 96kW awx?

    Kind regards

    Hi

No real preference, but I guess the Fuchs GT1 5w-40 is the most popular of the 505.01 oils and the Castrol Edge, Mobil ESP and Fuchs GT1 Pro C3 are the most popular 507.00 oils.

    Cheers

Well my friend VW via a commissioned German labritory have labled 505.01 a medium quality oil and 507.00 as high quality.

Without going into too much detail about oil basestock groups and additive packages , here it is .

The 507.00 superiority is also confirmed twice more by two separate sources .

    Hi

That's an interesting one, I've been told in the past that the 505.01 oils have very high levels of antiwear additives compared to other 'normal' oils, the level is similar to the top end performance oils. I've just spoken to someone who had an oil analysis done recently and his results showed the ZDDP level in PD oils are similar to performance oils and much higher than 507.00.

    Cheers

That's true , 505. 01 does have a high anti wear additive package and those same ZDDP anti wear metals that burn as you know with high ash making 505.01 unsuitable for dpf.

There is a funny confliction with Quantum 505.01 ( VW's own oil )

So to develop a suitable high anti wear DPF friendly PD oil (507.00) they had a higher concentration overall additive package with higher quality ( higher group oil basestocks ) .

The result a better oil .

A LongLife oil has to retain it's qualities for longer , making it more , soot , water and fuel resistant .

    It's a no brainer .
