Does anyone know if the Nokia 6500 Slider works with the Premium Telephone kit in my B6 Passat? I've trawled the internet with no luck so far. If it doesn't work, will a 6288, and do I need to plug it into the cradle when setting up the connection as this is what the VW dealer told me. Cheers.

I joined this forum to try to find out how to connect a phone to the system - factory fitted in my new Passat estate 4 Motion, linked to MFS wheel, pop-up keypad (next to steering wheel) & overhead voice activation. It worked with the salesman's Nokia, but I've tried Motorola, Nokia & O2 phones but none worked. Judging by results in the archive section, I see that everyone has had problems unless they had a particular model of Nokia mobile. (With remote SAP). They, like me had been to their local main dealer (completely usless), local in-car specialist (helpful, but no answer). It seems strange that VW have designed a system that no one seems to know anything about. If it requires particular makes & models of phone to work, why don't they publish the list? It is only half thought through - much like the DVD navigation system (Not a patch on the Tom Tom I used in my V5 Passat).
Why go to the bother of re-inventing complicated electronic additions when there are perfectly functioning (& much cheaper) versions already on the market?
And why has VW not addressed the issues raised in the many posts about this subject?

    Found on n95users.com forum:
Basically the N95 & N95 8Gb do work with the rSAP profiles in the Audi cars.

Switch on remote sim access on the phone and then pair from the car to the phone with the 16 digit pass code provided by the car phone system.

If you get a SIM symbol in the car display then you are on SAP mode, if you get a picture of a phone, then you are not and the phone does not support SAP.

I would also say are you sure you have a phone kit with SAP in the Q7?

Easy way to prove it is select the TEL button and at the bottom of the screen it should say something like "Find mobile phones...."

If it doesn't have this on the main screen you do not have SAP in your Audi.

Also you need to have the Nokia 810 contacts download manager running on your N95 to pass the contacts from the phone to the car kit. If you do not have this then you will only get SIM entries.

As I don't have a Nokia N95 (yet), I've no way of checking any of this.

The car kit in question is designed by Nokia, so Nokia's work best. I managed to get some answers out of VW Technical (who are not customer facing mind), basically only a few Siemens and most Nokias with rSAP will work using bluetooth. I don't know about the cradle (in arm rest) as I have never looked at it ...

I successfully connected my wife's Nokia 6300 and my 6500c (bar phone version of the 6500s) last night with no problems at all.

I know that isn't a definitive answer, but hopefully it helps.

If I can, I'll bring my colleague's 6500s home, pop my sim card in it and test it for you.

And no - you don't have to plug it into the cradle when setting it up - just switch Bluetooth on.

    Hi,

I realise that this question was asked a while ago now, but maybe this will help others.

I tried a 6500s in my Passat this evening and it worked perfectly with the factory fitted premium car kit.

The phone in question is an unlocked (non-operator specific) model but I don't think this should make any difference.

    I've now tried the 6300, 6500c, 6500s and E61 - all unlocked handsets - all worked perfectly.

If anyone needs any other Nokia related help in the future, I might be the guy to ask and I'd be glad to try to help

Just as a follow-up to this: any phone that has remote Sim Access Protocol will work with the factory fit car kit. Basically rSAP turns off the telephone radio and uses the phone built in to the car. The only thing your mobile is then doing is providing the sim card information to the car phone and that's it.

When I say work, I mean you can make and receive calls by directly dialling the numbers. As for synchronising the phone book that is a different matter.

As said before the factory kit is made by Nokia and so Nokia phones with rSAP connect and upload their phone books perfectly. Other makes you may have problems with as the phone book structure is Nokia's own.

I have a HTC TyTN II which uses windows mobile and Nokia does not know how to communicate with windows mobile. Although I could connect the phone by rSAP the phone book part was unavailable to me. The VW dealers had not got any ideas and followed it up with VW for me and still came to the same conclusion - no it can't be done.

After some time playing about with the system I did come up with this workaround, its not the perfect solution but at least it works:

    1. Pair the TyTN II to the car (Nokia HT-2) phone.

    2. Switch car ignition OFF and switch off TyTN II.

    3. Remove SIM from TyTN II.

    4. Place SIM into a compatible phone (in my case Nokia N95).

    5. Switch on N95, switch on Bluetooth, switch on Remote SIM access.

    6. Change the Bluetooth ID name on the N95 to the same as the TyTN II.

    7. Make phone discoverable via Bluetooth.

    8. Switch on car ignition - car phone will not be able to connect.

    9. Using car controls search for new device.

    10. When N95 is found, select connect, it will use the same user profile as the TyTN II (if you selected the same name for the Bluetooth ID).

    11. On the car browse to Settings - Phonebook - Update, this will then import all your contacts from your N95 (or compatible phone).

    12. Switch off ignition and switch off N95.

    13. Replace SIM back to TyTN II.

    14. Ensure TyTN II Bluetooth is ON, Remote SIM is ON and the phone is Discoverable.

    15. Switch on car ignition - car phone will not be able to connect.

    16. Using car controls search for new device.

    17. When TyTN II is found, select connect, it will use the same user profile as before.

    18. Now browse the car Phonebook as normal - All your contacts are now available for you to use.

    19. Don't forget to turn off discoverability on the TyTN II and to rename your compatible phone (N95) to prevent any future conflicts.

This worked for me! I hope it will work for you! Good Luck!

Thanks to members of the Forum it is now possible to buy a phone that connects but two major questions remain:

1 Why does VW sell an optional extra that none of their dealers knows anything about & by only trial & error is it possible to have a functioning system? &

2 What happens in a few years time when the currently working phones are replaced by new models? Should it be up to users to trial phones to find working models, or should VW provide the information to their customers?

I keep getting the feeling that they've not thought this option through - a lot like the sat nav system (at £1,800, the worst value for money of any of their options).

    July update:
Over the past few months I've been corresponding with Nokia Europe (they are very slow at replying).
Having told them about the Nokia badged box under the driver's seat etc, this is the opening of their latest reply:

    Dear Steve,

Thank you for contacting Nokia Care.

With regard to your email, I would not be able to confirm compatibility with third party hardware. As the VW Passat car kit is not manufactured by Nokia, I suggest that you speak to your VW Passat dealership or car kit installer to find out if any Nokia phones are fullly compatible with your car kit.
    !!!

I am just about to reply & let them know that it WAS manufactured by Nokia & that my 'car kit installer' was the VW factory in Germany.
As for my VW dealership, they know NOTHING about the Premium Car Kit (PCK) mainly because they have never had one fitted - they always recommend the Parrot system. After drawing a blank with VW and Nokia, I can agree with this view. The Parrot costs a fraction of the PCK, doesn't require a multi-function steering wheel and actually WORKS!

Subject: Nokia - Steve Eastman - Car Kit Compatibility

    Evelyn

This process is VERY difficult because my emails are answered by different people each time. As someone else will answer this one, let me outline the position:

NOBODY at NokiaCare, Nokia - accredited installers, VW, VW local dealers or any other part of EITHER organsiation can tell me for certain which Nokia (or any other make) phone will connect to the FACTORY-FITTED system in my VW. VW have only confirmed that it was designed and manufactured Nokia and tell me to contact Nokia.

So, here I am months later and STILL trying to obtain an answer to this simple question: Which phones are designed to work with the system you have designed for factory installation into VW cars?

As it is a factory-fitted option, local installers know NOTHING about it!!

Pease ask someone at NOKIA HQ which phones will work with the VW Premier Car Kit designed & manufactured by NOKIA.

Looking forward to an answer to this question.

    Stephen
